Active Care Certification Program
Health care in the United States is changing, especially as it relates to patient care. Passive care alone is no longer enough. Patients need to take ownership in their own treatment, and studies are confirming active care as an emerging new best practice for physicians.
As doctors, chiropractors must teach and assist their patients in appropriate self-care/active care by developing patient’s coping skills and motivating them to resume activities. Studies over the past several years show that active care is helpful in returning a patient to pre-morbid functional capacity. The new model no longer focuses on pathology or symptomatology. Pain is being used less as an indicator of patient progress; function is the measure of patient recovery.
ChiroCare is committed to preparing our network providers for the evolving health care environment by providing them with the tools and information needed to successfully promote active care in their practice.
Thank you for your interest in participating in this certification program. Participation in the course is free, with an agreement to participate in online outcomes. Upon completion of the program, providers will be eligible for a higher reimbursement rate for the billing of active care.
Additional information regarding the active care program can be obtained by calling ChiroCare at 651-389-2006 or 1-866-714-0524.
Course Description
Active Care Certification is a 9.5-hour course of instruction that emphasizes the current state of evidence regarding the use of active care programs in chiropractic practice. This course will start with what is known and what evidence suggests are reasonable theories for the mechanisms of therapeutic effectiveness of rehabilitation programs to affect spinal stability, function and pain. A background in exercise physiology will be reviewed. Basic principles of clinical epidemiology (e.g. LR+/-, NNT etc.) will also be reviewed. This course will stress low technology rehabilitation and active care programs that can be initiated in practice for eventual patient home care. Specific protocols for spinal stabilization (cervical to lumbopelvic) will be covered. The course is a four-part series of online and classroom instruction. Participation in all four parts is required for certification.
Participants will be able to complete the following after completing the course:
- Describe the physiological basis for muscle strength and how different types of exercise affect muscle function
- Understand the nature of stability
- Perform an evaluation of muscle function
- Design a clinically sound active care treatment program
