Answers To Your Questions

What is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is a health care profession based on the interactions of the spine and nervous system, as well as the surrounding muscles.
What can chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors are known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches. They also treat injuries and disorders involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. The benefits of chiropractic also extend to general health issues since our body structure affects our overall function.
Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?
A referral is not needed to see a doctor of chiropractic; however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements. Contact your employer’s human resources department—or your insurance provider directly—to find out if there are any referral requirements.
Will I be required to remove my clothing at my appointment?
Some procedures may require you to remove some pieces of clothing, but most procedures do not. Talk with your chiropractor if you have any concerns or questions.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment. Some people may experience mild soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise.
Is chiropractic care expensive?
Most insurance plans cover chiropractic care for acute conditions. Total costs are lower for patients who received treatment (either initially or during the course of their care) from chiropractic physicians. Patients usually need to make a copayment at the time of their appointment.
How do I find the right chiropractor?
One of the best ways to select a doctor of chiropractic is by getting a referral from a friend, family member, colleague, or another health care provider. You can also locate a dependable chiropractor near you by using ChiroCare’s Find a Doctor search option.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is "locked up," or not moving properly. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is to eliminate interference in the nervous system, improving spinal function and overall health.
Are all patients adjusted the same way?
No. Each patient's care is uniquely different from every other patient. Adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age and condition of health.
Do insurance plans cover chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is a state-mandated benefit for some groups, but not all. Most insurance companies cover the initial and some rehabilitative care for acute conditions, but most do not cover maintenance or wellness treatments. If you are unsure, talk with your chiropractor and insurance company before treatment.
Will I have to keep going to appointments forever?
If you are being treated for a specific condition, the treatment plan ends when the condition is resolved. People who feel better after spinal manipulation usually do so after just a few visits, and more may not be needed.
Will it hurt?
Most techniques emphasize using minimal force and gentle pressure. A chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort.
Do chiropractors crack bones?
No. More often patients will comment that they hear a “popping” sound with each maneuver, but there is no need for concern. The noises you might hear are tiny pockets of air releasing.
Who is ChiroCare?
ChiroCare is a nonprofit independent chiropractic provider network. ChiroCare’s network is made up of a select group of chiropractors throughout Minnesota and the upper-Midwest.
Can I adjust myself?
No. Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately.
Is it safe to see a chiropractor when I’m pregnant?
Yes. Pregnant mothers find that chiropractic adjustments improve their pregnancy and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age and condition of health.
